How do I create a Basic UDI-DI with GS1 standards?

Modified on Wed, 28 Aug at 8:21 PM

Basic UDI-DIs (or Global Model Number – GMN in GS1 standards) are created from the GS1 Company Prefix(es) your GS1 Member Organisation has assigned to your company. The GMN comprises a GS1 Company Prefix and a Model Reference – this Model Reference is assigned by the company and can be for instance internal numbers (alphanumeric) already in use in your company.

The two combined (GS1 Company Prefix + Model Reference) can be up to 23 characters long. Please find more information on our brochure "Be ready for UDI in Europe": https://www.gs1.org/sites/default/files/gs1_udi_in_the_eu_v2_august-2019.pdf

The GMN has two mandatory check characters, that you can generate using this tool:https://www.gs1.org/services/gmn-generator

GS1 has developed helper libraries that can be integrated in your systems to calculate automatically:https://www.gs1.org/services/check-character-calculator/gmn-helper-libraries
