What is 'Context'?

Modified on Tue, 20 Aug at 4:12 PM

'Context' is a method of grouping attributes and validations based upon specific business scenarios. Information is communicated between trading partners using a 'Context' and its associated attributes and values. Each Context is based upon a specific business process, industry, product type, or target market.

A context-sensitive approach will reduce the number of 'core' trade item attributes. Core attributes should be limited to those broadly applicable to a trade item or service, in general, and independent of Sector.

The application of Contexts to trade items is intended to increase the deployment speed for new attributes and values, from existing and new sectors; while reducing the implementation impact on existing trading partners and their trade items. The following guidelines have been established for the management of GDSN Contexts:
  • The creation of Contexts will be managed through the GSMP (Global Standards Management Process).
  • Contexts will be managed like other message standards through versioning and release schedules.
  • Contexts will be stored in the GDD (Global Data Dictionary) for retrieval along with associated data and rules.
  • Only Contexts created through GSMP will be used within the GDSN.
