What are the first steps I should take to implement GS1 standards?

The first step is to talk to your local GS1 Member Organisation. The Member Organisation will be able to help you understand where to star.

Next you need to orientate regarding what you want, what other hospitals have been doing and how you can get support (from GS1 or may be a Solution Provider). GS1 MO will be able to provide case studies which highlight key success factors with each implementation.

It is very important to have Senior Management sponsorship for such a project. Ideally you need to understand the current challenges and how GS1 can support these - Map out a project plan and find some quick wins along the way.

In addition, GS1 Healthcare has developed a Hospital Implementation Guide which contains a 10 step process to start implementation.

The most important thing is to ensure that if you need assistance, you ask for help from GS1.
