What is an Application Identifier (AI)?

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 1:39 PM

An Application Identifier is a two, three or four-digit prefix used to identify the meaning and the format of the data that follows it (the data field). Application Identifiers are used in those GS1 data carriers that have the option of encoding more than one type of GS1 data.

AIs have been defined for identification, traceability data, dates, quantities, measurements, locations, and many other types of information. The data presented may be alphanumeric or numeric, depending on how the data has been defined.
