According to the GS1 General Specifications, the EAN and UPC barcode formats are accepted globally, however local buying guides accepted by the retailer may be different and accept only one type of symbol, EAN or UPC.
GS1 advises that you always have a conversation with your trading partners regarding their requirements and capabilities.
