How does GSMP develop standards?

Modified on Wed, 28 Aug at 7:44 PM

The GSMP process consists of 4 key steps:
  1. Statement of Business Need: users submit work requests to GSMP for a new or a change to GS1 Standards and Guidelines. Requests are assessed, prioritised and classified as either development or maintenance. Maintenance requests are routed to Standards Maintenance Groups (SMGs). Development requests are assessed for industry support, community participation and strategy alignment and submitted to the Industry Engagement Steering Committee (IESC) for standards development consideration.
  2. Requirements Analysis: a GSMP work group collaborates to define business requirements to address the business need.
  3. System Development:  a GSMP  work group develops the standard and presents it to the GSMP community for review and approval. The standard is published once it has been ratified by GS1 governance committees.
  4. Collateral Development: a GSMP work group develops collateral materials to facilitate industry deployment of the GS1 Standard. All GS1 standards and guidelines are posted on:http://www.gs1.org/standards.
