How are barcodes used on coupons (money off vouchers)?

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 1:43 PM

Coupons can be identified by barcodes either globally via Global Coupon Number AI(255) or via restricted geographic distribution, and this means that each GS1 Member Organisation can develop a local solution if this is required.

Coupons typically encode a monetary value (expressed in the local currency). Typically these national solutions allow an EAN-13 barcode to be used to encode the value of the promotional discount associated with a given product or series of products.

GS1 Global Office provides a range of prefixes (990-999) for these local solutions.

There is also a  common currency coupon solution for countries using the euro, and a USA coupon identification scheme which are defined in the GS1 General Specifications.
For more information on coupons, please contact your local GS1 Member Organisation.
