Why should I use the GS1 Application Identifiers in a barcode?

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 1:53 PM

Using GS1 Application Identifiers means that any organisation will be able to interpret all the data provided in a GS1 barcode with no confusion. This data includes all the GS1 Identification Keys as well as attribute information such as serial number, batch number, expiry date, etc.

The GS1 Application Identifers can be encoded in GS1-128, GS1 DataBar, GS1 DataMatrix and GS1 QR Code symbols.

The exact choice of symbology, as well as the exact combination of AIs, will be determined by the application.

For example very small healthcare items may use GS1 DataMatrix or GS1 DataBar, extended packaging uses GS1 QR Code, while GS1-128 barcodes are recommended for outer cases and logistic labels.
