GS1 Application Identifiers (AI), as defined in ISO/IEC 15418, are mandatory when using the GS1 endorsed barcodes GS1-128, GS1 DataBar, GS1 DataMatrix and GS1 QR Code and GS1 DotCode.
The use of the Application Identifiers, combined with the choice of one of these barcodes, provides:
- a high level of system security thanks to various integrity checks
- smaller overall barcode size due to concatenation
- data requirements to be determined by the business application
- lower equipment costs, and greater compatibility, due to global standards.
