What is the China GTIN filing procedure?

Modified on Wed, 28 Aug at 7:29 PM

If non-GS1 China GS1 Company Prefixes are used to create GTINs for products made and sold in China, their use must be filed with GS1 China.

A procedure has been created to address a Chinese Government Regulation that requires the filing of GTINs for all products that are produced and distributed within China. These procedures are designed to allow GS1 Members to leverage their GS1 Company Prefixes throughout the world without restraint. This is a temporary procedure; GS1 China has been working to discontinue the current regulations.

Background
  • A Chinese Regulation requires that product produced and distributed in China, when not using a GS1 China Company Prefix, may be required to do filing with the local GS1 China office (GTIN Filing)
  • This Regulation is designed to support traceability to the Chinese Domestic Companies of every GTIN produced and sold in China
  • GS1 Members with product made in & for sale in China should follow the GTIN Filing Procedures for the GTINs produced and distributed in China
  • GTIN Filing Procedures are an interim solution

Full details of how to complete this process can be obtained via your local GS1 Member Organisation which will be able to explain all the details to you.

If the Chinese company’s name does not appear on the packaging, then this process does not need to be followed. If the product is made by, say, three different Chinese companies and their names appear on the packaging, then all three companies will need to follow this process.
