These bar size restrictions exist so that:
- All retailers can purchase scanning systems that interoperate across manufacturer product packaging from all around the world
- All manufacturers can mark products the same way for all their customers.
- People can scan products quickly and accurately. This is especially important in high-speed applications like Retail Point-of-Sale ’slot’ scanners.
