Can Digital Link URIs in QR codes and NFC tags be read by scanners today?

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 2:32 PM

It is the General Specifications that define what is and isn’t a conformant GS1 barcode, not Digital Link. At the time of writing, the GenSpecs do not endorse the use of a Digital link URI in a data carrier as being conformant, however, this is under active discussion with the Future of On pack Coding work and is likely to change in the foreseeable future.

At multiple events since June 2019, barcode generation software as well as hand held and fixed scanners, have been shown that do work with DL. Thanks to the free, open source software that GS1 makes available, the amount of effort required by manufacturers to modify their equipment to work with GS1 Digital Link is minimal.
