What is an Electronic Product Code (EPC)?

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 2:52 PM

The Electronic Product Code, or EPC, forms the bridge between barcode-based use of the GS1 identifiers and the world of RAIN RFID. EPC gives a way of encoding GS1 identifiers on a RAIN RFID tag.

For example, EPC provides a way of serializing the GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) to better support visibility and traceability applications that provide significant advantages for businesses and consumers.

Other GS1 keys and Application Identifiers can be encoded in RAIN RFID tags. This is described in the GS1/EPC Tag Data Standard. In addition to the binary string format, GS1 TDS also provides additional EPC "carrier agnostic" syntaxes to be used in EPCIS.
