Can RAIN RFID tags carry more than just an identifier?

RAIN RFID tags can carry other information than just a unique identifier. GS1 Application Identifiers , like expiration date or batch lot number, can be encoded in the User memory of the tag in a standardized way (see Tag Data Standard).

Upon some process/business requirements, this additional information stored in the RAIN RFID tag can be updated without the need to change the tag itself. The unique identifier (EPC) can also be used as a pointer to additional data stored in a data base. This identifier can also be converted into a URL using the GS1 Digital Link Standard.

For example, if you need to handle food and/or beverages on its shelves, then it could benefit from a RAIN RFID system. Basic optical data carriers allow to identify the manufacturers and products but cannot identify unique items. If each food or beverage item has the same barcode, then employees will not be able to identify unique expiration dates or manufacture dates; therefore, they will not know which items will pass their expiration date first.

RAIN RFID systems are ideal for the food and beverage industries because tags can store expiration or manufacture data and this kind of data can be processed automatically.
