What is the EPC header for?

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 2:42 PM

The EPC header is used to indicate the format of the EPC code. EPC Header is 8-bit long and indicates what kind of GS1 keys or identifiers is used.

For example, header 30h indicates that EPC coding scheme is SGTIN-96, a serialized GTIN encoded with 96 bits. The list of different headers is defined in the GS1 Tag Data Standard.

EPC headers can also be used to focus on dedicated types of RAIN RFID tags during inventory. For example, in logistic processes, one would like to inventory only tags that carries SSCC identifiers (header is 31h).
