RFID is not only a question of communication between tags and readers. In order to deploy a solution, other standards are needed.
The first one is about data encoding. This is the purpose of the Tag Data Standard. GS1's EPC Tag Data Standard (TDS) defines the Electronic Product Code (EPC), including its correspondence to GS1 keys and other existing codes.
TDS also specifies data that is carried on RAIN RFID tags, including the EPC, User Memory data, control information, and tag manufacture information. One also need to establish communication between the client and the readers.
This is where Low Level Reader Protocol comes into action. LLRP is a protocol between software and a reader. LLRP provides very fine control over the operation of a single reader. It composed of almost 100 standard commands and provides an interface to low level functionality that is uniform across different reader vendors.
Finally, other standards like Reader Management and Application Level Events complete the global set of available standards. The figure below summaries how all these standards work together.
